Peter Moores is Raymond James’ UK Country Manager and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Raymond James Investment Services Limited (RJIS) and Raymond James Financial International Limited, Executive Director of Raymond James Wealth Management Ltd (holding company) as well as Non-Executive Director of Charles Stanley & Co.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Peter read Business Studies at Trinity College, Dublin and was conferred with both a BBS (hons) and an MA degree. Peter has also completed executive education programmes at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business and the London Business School.
Peter started his career with Chase Manhattan Bank in New York where he completed both the Associate Development Programme and the Financial Analyst (Credit) Programme. Peter spent 10 years working at Chase Manhattan in New York, Frankfurt and London initially as a Relationship Manager at Chase International Institutional and then as Regional Sales Director – Europe, at Chase Asset Management & Mutual Funds as Vice President. Peter then joined DAB bank, a large discount broker, in Munich, Germany as Head of Group Development. In February 2002, Peter was seconded to DAB’s UK subsidiary, SELFtrade UK, as Managing Director and Senior Country Officer. The SELFtrade Group was sold to Societe Generale Group in March 2003 and Peter continued to manage the entity on behalf of the new owners. Peter joined Raymond James Investment Services in December 2004 as Managing Director and became CEO in February 2005. Peter was appointed as Raymond James Country Manager for the UK in July 2013.
Peter chairs the RJIS Operating Committee and the Raymond James Consumer Duty & Conduct Committee. In addition, he is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), currently serves as a member of their board, and Chair of its Membership Committee. Peter is also a member of the Institute of Directors, a mentor to start-up businesses in London Business School’s Summer Entrepreneurship Programme, and is an LGBT Great Executive Ally.
Peter is married with three children. He is also an ambassador for Co-operation Ireland’s Youth Leadership Programme that seeks to identify and intervene with specific young people who are at risk. The overall objective of the Programme is to build safer, healthier communities.

Who was Raymond James?The Raymond in our name is actually from Edward Raymond, owner of a 15-employee mutual fund sales group, Raymond and Associates, along Florida’s west coast. He sold his company to Bob James on 15 July 1964, on condition that the surviving firm be called Raymond, James & Associates. Three days after the sale, Ed Raymond was involved in a near-fatal automobile accident and never joined the firm. Nonetheless, even after Raymond had passed away, Bob James insisted that his name remain on the door – ahead of James’ own. That was a promise he made to Ed Raymond three days before the accident, and Bob James was a man who kept his promises. |

Bear Market of 1974The severe bear market of 1974 threatened the existence of Raymond James, which was bleeding capital by the day. Tom James, his father and other leaders took extreme measures to keep the firm afloat, slashing costs, foregoing paychecks and even attempting to sell the firm for just enough capital to protect client assets and retain as many associates as possible. The story could have ended very differently if not for a sharp upturn and continued rebound in the stock markets late in the year. |

Taking Raymond James PublicWhen consideration was being given to taking Raymond James public, Tom James penned a letter to shareholders (largely employees at the time). ” … the public offering should be considered as a statement of our independence. While this is a psychological rather than an economic rationale, it is nonetheless very important. We have asserted for some time that we are not interested in becoming a small part of a very large corporation. That assertion results mainly from the inclinations of management rather than the economic benefits associated with either alternative. The public stock offering affords us the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of the best of both worlds. While shareholders will be given liquidity at fair market value, we will still have the ability to control our own destiny.” After 40+ years of Tom’s leadership, upon becoming CEO, Paul Reilly was often questioned about whether the company might ultimately surrender its cherished independence and be acquired by some larger entity. His response: “Not while I’m around.” It’s a theme that continues today. |
